shecco highlights Role of Market Research for Developing Countries at UNIDO-UNEP African Expert Group Meeting

05 December 2013

At a Joint UNIDO-UNEP Expert Group Meeting on the Implementation of HCFC Phase-out Management Plans in Sub-Saharan African Countries, shecco has stressed the importance of data collection and active stakeholder involvement for a successful transition to more sustainable refrigerant options.

Held from 26-29 November 2013 at the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) headquarters in Vienna, Austria, the Expert Group Meeting brought together National Ozone Unit (NOU) officers from the Sub-Saharan region to discuss barriers and possible solutions to a faster transition away from ozone-depleting substances. Jointly organised by two leading United Nations agencies the four-day event was the first of its kind to thoroughly discuss a variety of issues, ranging from awareness rising, training and financing models, to illegal trade, policy frameworks and demonstration projects.

shecco was invited to present on the role of active stakeholder involvement and data collection as some of the most effective means to create a level playing field and close information gaps impeding a fast transition to natural substances under the Montreal Protocol process.

Nina Masson, Head of Market Research shecco, presented selected results from the “GUIDE UNIDO” as a successful model of cooperation between the private sector (shecco), a leading UN agency (UNIDO) and further support by a second UN agency (UNEP), in addition to involving local industry stakeholders. The GUIDE UNIDO features responses from 207 respondents representing 82 developing countries. It also includes 50+ case studies collected through UNIDO’s and shecco’s global network of industry contacts.

“Natural, HFC-free, solutions are already available for a variety of applications, world regions and climates. Local initiatives increase. However, a lack of general information, specific data, awareness and active stakeholder involvement are still among the highest priorities to be addressed to drive market change,” states Masson.

“Market research provides a solid basis for obtaining exactly that type of data needed for closing individual knowledge gaps. It unveils existing challenges so that they can be better addressed. More importantly, it visualises success stories to enhance knowledge transfer that is so urgently needed,” she adds.
